Rules

The XC league is an informal series of cross country meets. The league is designed to help pilots of all abilities in improving their flying skills. The league is open to hang-glider and paraglider pilots who are comfortable thermalling with other pilots, and who are able to land safely whether in a designated landing zone or other. All pilots participating in the league must have a minimum rating of P3 or H3. If not, you must get approval from the meet director before attending the meets.

All club and park rules must be adhered to at each of the meet sites. If the local club at the meet site requires waivers to be signed and daily fees to be paid, it must be done before you'll be able to participate in the meet. In some cases the meet director will be collecting these items in the morning of the planned meets. Failure to abide by the local club rules jeapordizes the future of the league being able to use the site - so please do what is required to ensure that we will be able to continue to use the site as our playground.

Two tasks will be held every meet weekend - weather permitting. In the unlikely event that the weather forecast looks bad for the whole weekend the competition may be postponed to the next available weekend. If that weekend is also cancelled, then the tasks for that month may be cancelled. Scoring will be based on GPS tracklogs using FS scoring software. Using this system, there may or may not be leading points and each task can award a maximum of 1000 points to the winner. Overall winners will be determined by the cummulative scores after the last meet during the calendar year. In order to win the overall for So Cal you must have attended at least one local So Cal event. If all your points were earned through combined (Nor Cal & So Cal) meets you will not be eligible to win the overall So Cal title. There will also be winners of the idividual weekend-long meets. Just like the PWC, you have the opportunity to win an individual meet as well a shot at the overall league series title. Important note: You do not have to participate in all the tasks in order to place well at the end of the year. Only half the total tasks flown will count towards the total results. Since it will be hard for pilots to attend every weekend, and sometimes even both days within each weekend long event, half of all the completed (valid) tasks will be tossed out. This works well for pilots only able to attend a portion of the total events. It also works well for those who are able to attend most of the events but have a few days with poor results that need to be dropped. If the number of tasks to be scored are an odd number (ex. 11), then the odd task will be scored, thus 6 tasks out of the 11 will be used for the series overall score total. A task is invalid if zero pilots make the first waypoint or the minimum distance, whichever is the shorter. There are 3 PG and 3 HG categories for the league meets based on the safety rating and/or the glider type. Determine which category applies to you and note it on your registration form.

PG Category DHV / LTF Rating EN Rating AFNOR
OPEN Uncertified Open Competition

H2 Topless
H3 Kingpost

Should a pilot change their glider to a different rated glider during the year, then the glider category that the pilot is entered into is based on the highest rating of the glider the pilot flew in the league during the season. Notify the meet director of the change.

At the start of each day there will be a weather and pilot briefing before the task is set. The donation to be scored and posted in the task results is $10. Retreive and transportation is not supplied by the league host/organizer. All retreiving will be organized by the pilot participants. Don't forget to offer money for gas and/or effort when you're given a retreive.

Waypoints and software for downloading waypoints can be found at this website and/or sent to you via email.

All pilots must have submitted their league pilot registration and hand delivered a waiver before they can participate in any of the league meets. These forms can be found on this website and/or sent to you via email.

All pilots must fly with a serviceable 2m radio, a serviceable reserve parachute, and a GPS device that is able to record their tracklog. If your GPS is ancient, please send an Email with info on your GPS unit so as to determine whether your unit is compatible with the scoring software.

Cables for the Garmin 76 series, and the Flytec/Brauniger 5030 / 60xx will be supplied by the meet director for downloading tracklogs. If you use a different GPS and/or require a different cable, you need to bring your own cable to upload waypoints and download tracklogs.

RULES OF THE AIR. All pilots must obey the rules of the air: first pilot in the thermal sets the turn direction, pilots entering the thermal must approach from the outside, observe normal ridge rules. Failure to observe standard rules (including no cloud flying) will result in the pilot scoring a zero for the task and possibly not being allowed to attend any more league events.

Protests and disputes will be dealt with by the meet director and two additional verteran pilots (TBD).

If at the end of the league two pilots have the same score, the winner will be the one who has scored higher in individual tasks.

Tracklogs in KML format may be submitted by Email to the meet director using the GPSdump software on the download page. Tracklogs must be submitted by midnight on Tuesday following the last task. Failure to submit within this time will results in the pilot being awarded minimum distance (boo-hoo).

Relaunches are only allowed if the pilot fails to make the first waypoint.
